I bought less than a year ago a DVD-CV51. Other than the Panasonic name, one of the reasons I bought it was because almost all of the forum said it was one of the best players on the market.
When I try playing a prerecorded DVD, about 45 minutes into the movie the picture starts to pixelate, tile, jump, skip, who knows what else. The sound will also drop, pop, and breakup. The timer on the player jumps all over as well, skipping forward and backwards up to 5 seconds at a time. This has happened on more than on disk. I was trying to watch the director's cut of Sci-Fi Channel's Dune and had to quit because the tiling and skipping were so bad. On the Spiderman DVD it skipped for about ten seconds and then kept playing. On a PBS "Cadfael" DVD, not a skip, pop, or drop. A friend claims it's because the DVD-CD51 is not a progressive scan unit. I appreciate any help you can give.

Rental DVDs? Check while you're in the store for scratches. People think DVDs are indestructable, but they are quite a bit more sensitive to scratches than CDs.
If you rent a disc that won't play, tell the person at the store and they'll give you a credit.
But ... try washing the DVD with a soft lint-free cloth before you play it.
Another possibility is the player's lens is dirty. It may show up halfway through a movie because that's when the track switches from one disc layer to another.
A lens cleaning disc can help.

Actually, it happens less on rental discs than on bought discs. And the library discs I've used have been okay.
Can you use the same type of lens cleaning disc for dvd as for a CD? I already have one from DiscWasher for my CD palyer.

I have quite a library of dvd's myself, over 160 now, and every now and then, I get a dvd that does that. A while into the movie, it will break the image into pixels, then some parts of the screen will show the movie while others just show still images from 20 minutes ago, but the sound still works fine. In my case, it's not the dvd player (Sony DVP-NS715P), it's the dvd. I'll put it in a different dvd player and the same thing happens.
All I can offer, is try returning the dvd to the store you bought it at. If they give you guff, make them put it in a dvd player in the back and have them FF> to the point where it happens. If they don't give you a fair trade on a different dvd, piss & moan to MGM or whoever made the dvd.
