Thought I posted this last night but I guess not ... oh well.
Just noticed my heat pump making a "funny" noise. About every five minutes it growls as if the compressor is about to start. This lasts for just a second or two then stops. Five minutes later goes thru this again.
My question, do I have a problem or not? If so, what is causing the problem and what will it take to fix?
The heat pump is a Trane. It's original to the house, about 12 years old. I've lived here 3 years with no heat pump issues. Thermostat is a non-digital Trane also. Aux heat is on quite a bit but not always. This is Maryland burb of Washington DC. Cold here; most days in the last 6 weeks or so just above freezing for highs. Unit has run almost continuously for the last 6 weeks at least. Thermostat set at 66 degrees. It is definitely warmer inside than outside.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Go the outdoor section and feel the larger of the 2 freon pipes to see if it is hot. [do this of course when the unit is running] If not, then the compressor isn't running for some resom. Problem could be as simple as a bad capacitor, or maybe the compressor needs what we call a hard start kit, or maybe the contacts in the compressor contactor are worn away, or it could be a bad compressor.
