I have a houseful of kids, and I've recently abandoned carpet for laminate. But now I have bare stairs (pulled the carpet up) with 1" pressed wood treads. The treads are in pretty good shape, but the plywood kickplates aren't so hot. My remodeling funds are about exhausted, and I'm really in need of a creative inexpensive way to finish the stairs. On a scale from 1 to 10, I'm a 3 on the handyman scale. Thanks all. I'm realy at a loss for what to do. I can't ge my local contacts to realize that this needs to be an INEXPENSIVE solution that is within my abilities as a handyman.

How about "peel and press" vinyl tile squares or even glue on vinyl squares. Lots of patterns and colors available.
Look a little more on this site. Some folks are talking about using laminate flooring on the stairs.
