I have a home built in 1975 with a off-white brick fireplace. The bricks do not have a smooth surface, but more like they've been textured with a comb. Lines running vertically down the bricks. The material also seems to be more porous than normal brick. The bricks seem like they have yellowed to me through the years. They aren't painted white, they are made of an off-white material of some sort. At any rate, is there any way of whitening them? I'm about to paint the rest of the interior and whatever color I use on the wall next to the fireplace either makes the fireplace look yellower, or the new color will look grayed.
Any suggestions would be most appreciate.
Thanks!

Hi,
Try to put something different.
I made a project with spatuled coating stucco, with excellent results. The stucco covered the bricks and the undesired colors
with a thin texture
You will need to wash and sand the surfaces first.
You will find lots of stucco resources at Home Depot.
Hope this helps,
