I want to replace my existing chandelier with a similar one. I don't want to replace it at the ceiling fixture but at the end of the existing chain which hangs from the ceiling. How do I do this safely?

hello jrigby,
from the info in your post im not quite sure what u r wanting to do but it sounds like u r wanting to just replace the head, and leave the chain and wire. since i dont know your perticulerl situation i cant say for sure if this can be done, some have a small j box at the top of the light and others r direct wired, u will have to make the call on this since i cant see how it is done. if its a direct wire i recomend u replace the entire unit. eather way the safest way to do this is to turn off the breaker that controls the circut and do the chainge out, be sure u mark the wires as to where they go, and dont undo any others that may be in the celling box just the 1's that connect to the light.. i have seen the heads chainged out that were direct wired by cutting the wires and wirenutting the new heads wires to the drop, but splices can creat places for problems.
