What's the difference between a single pole and double pole switch? Can a double pole switch eliminate problems due to plugging in backwards?

hello,
the deferance between the 2 r as folows. a singel pole switch only has a place to put 1 set of wires to switch, and a doubel pole has 2, singel pole switches 120 and doubel normaly is 4 220.

But it will totally remove power from the load irregardless of which line is hot.

If you used a single pole switch, there would be a 50/50 chance the load would still
be hot, if you are plugging it into miswired
outlets (which should be fixed),
or are using a non-polarized cord.
