I'm wiring an appliance using a heavy duty power cord that I cut in half. When I plug it into the three prong outlet in this old house we rent, the white wire is hot, and the black neutral. I'm not sure if the colors are simply reversed in the power cord, or if the outlet is wired backwards.
Which side of the outlet should always carry the hot wire, the side with the longer slot or the side with the shorter slot? In other words, does the wide prong of a plug carry hot or neutral?

The wide slot carries the neutral. The narrow slot carries the hot wire. On the hot side of the rec., there is a brass colored screw. It should have the hot wire connected to it.

Thanks for your speedy reply. One more question I forgot to ask. If I use a double pole switch rather than a single pole switch would it eliminate the problem of possible backwards plugging?
