I am planning to do an addition to my house and the building dept in my town tells me I have to take an "electrical test" in order to get an electrical permit & do the wiring myself. Any one have a clue what may be in this test

hello mark,
more citys need to do this type of testing befor giveing out building permits whin wireing is being done by home owner.
my best gess what they wil ask on this test is questions on the code pertaining to residances, and general wireing practices. if u plain on takeing this test i recomend u get a code book and study it, this will help u on the code part but as far as wireing practices it comes from experiance only. good luck on your test, u may need it.

I would ask the folks at the town office what things you should study. Clearly they won't give you the actual test questions, but they certainly should tell you what types of things you need to know. The idea, after all, is to make sure you do a safe job that meets code. If they act like it's some sort of secret, you should complain to the town manager/mayor/council.
