We recently began renovating our 1895 home and attic insulation was high on the list. I added 4" fiberglass bats between the rafters over some existing compressed fiberglass bats and 2 inches of some kind of white, fluffy fiber material. Once all the second floor electrical is run, I plan to go back and add either more bats or blow in loose insulation. However, most external walls end 2 ft. below the attic, placing the soffits at the bottom of a steep slope. At least half the soffits are inaccesible from the outside due to height. Ventilation is allowed through gable-end vents.

Is it advisable to completely fill the spaces of the inaccessible soffits with blown-in insulation, and add foam channels to those spaces I can reach before insulating? I plan to add blocking to the bottom of the vented spaces to prevent insulation from blocking the air flow.

Also, is it better to add loose insulation or more bats over the existing bats?

an attic needs positive and negative airflow to properly ventilate. ridge vents and soffit vent work in conjunction as would pararell ridge vents. personally i think ridge and soffit vents are most effective when installed correctly
