I would like to install a security system, using my pc.
But also when I built the house in 1996 I asked to have the house wired for security. So I do have 6 areas that have been prewired. This wire is white, so not sure if they can be hooked up to cameras. Maybe you would know what it could handle. Perhaps they are only for motion sensors.
But failing that I would like to know if the web cams come completly wireless, that it could be hooked up to a pc and monitor different areas of the house.

What wireless cams are you looking at? There's a lot to choose from, starting at the bottom with X-10, all the way up to the professional systems. These days pretty much everything comes wireless.
When you say "completely wireless", exactly what do you mean? Even a "completely wireless" cam has to have power, so if it's powered by a battery, you have to recharge it. If it's not powered by a battery, it has to be plugged-in. So, most of the time, when you hear "wireless" they mean the actual signal is sent to a receiver by radio transmissions. Now, if you have wireless video, you have to send it somewhere, so you have a receiver at the other end (by the computer, monitor, vcr, whatever you record with) that has wires that go to your recording device. And, of course, you have to power it too. So you are still going to have some wires, but the actual signal transmission is done wirelessly.
