We recently put in a covered terrace with a slate floor. The contractor used regular mortar (cement + sand) as grout for the slate. However, he did a less than satisfactory job in cleaning the grout off the slates. Any suggestions on how I can best get the mortar off them? Thanks.

First and least aggressive would be to try white vinegar in warm/hot water (50/50) and see what happens. You may have to do it a few times but should notice a difference after the first pass.

When that doesn't work there are progressively stronger acids that are available at your Home Center but try the vinegar first it's the safest.:)
