I need to order a new door and do not want to appear as ignorant as I feel right now. How do I determine if I am in need of a right or left hand door??

I have heard more than one way to tell. What I do when i order a door is explain the the agent is that I want the door to open into a room with the hinges on one side or the other. I have also told them that when I stand with my back to the hinge I want the door to open in such a way. I would rather do this than get it wrong.

Stand on the side the door swings too..for an exterior door, that is generally to the inside of the house. In an interior door, it could be either room.
Facing the door with it swinging to you, if the knob is on the right side, it is a right hand door. IF the knob is on the left, the door is a left hand door.
It's as simple as that.
