My husband and I are veteran diyers but this is one we have never attempted before and don't know where to begin. We are going to turn our attached garage into a family room off of the living room and want to put an entry into that room from the living room, not a door just an archway without the arch, it will be approx. 4 feet wide. What steps do we need to take to accomplish this?

What has you stumped? The framing for the 4 ft. opening? If so, I would suggest that you hire a pro to do it for you. That is a bearing wall and if it is not framed properly, you will have problems. Sight unseen, you are probably looking at a few hundred dollars, plus dealing with whatever electrical or plumbing may be involved, and doing the sheetrock, painting, etc. yourself.

My main concern is structural, I know I will need a header to carry the load, but if I use 2 2x6 will 2 2x4's be enuff to carry the load. The sheetrock, painting and other things are easy to us as I said before we are veteran diyers. There is one plug which we will move, which will not be a problem either.

Double 2X6's with a 1/2" plywood or OSB fill all screwed together will work fine for the header. Locating the opening between 2 existing studs will make it a little easier for you. A 2X4 trimmer under each end of the header will be plenty.

Thank you so much, that is what we had thought but of everything I read on these chat boards I was expecting "major surgery" with engineers and everything, but we can do this with no problem. I appreciate your help.;)
