have a tc2551rd 26" emerson tv every so often flick to a different channel then back to the one being watched, removed batteries from remote no change, ran cable straight in, not through vcr, tried std irc & hrc settings with no change. Looking for any suggestions

Don't know if this will help.
I used to experience volume and channel changed by itself when my RCA TV picked up signal from fluorescent lamp into its remote control sensor. When I turn off the lamp, everything worked fine.
What happened if you black tape the sensor on the TV set? if it still do the same, then it's not outside interference.

Another possibility is reflections from passing traffic hitting the sensor.
