How do I remove a VHS tape that my 5 year old pushed in backwards?

I just removed one last week! I'm sure each VCR unt is a little different but I used a knife and gently lifted each front-edge end upward without using to much force...along with some giggling and the tape finally came out. On my VCR unit the tape was actually sitting slightly down into the tray as if the unit had accepted the tape and was reading to play it. Your unit may be different... Good luck!

Take out the few small screws that hold the cover in place, remove the cover and just tinker around with it. Becareful about touching the siver drum, thats your heads and it scratches easily.
on a lighter side vcr's are getting cheap it will cost more to have some one repair than to buy new, maybe let the kid help you out, it may be a good learning exercise for him.
