I want to have all 17 windows in my house replaced do to rotten sills and the fact that after 25 years of mistreatment {before me} they leak and do not function correctly. I want to use new construction Anderson or Pella windows depending on the cost difference. My question is. If I remove all the enterior moldings and sills can the new construction windows be completely installed from outside? This would then eleviate the need for taking vacation time to watch personal belongings. And yes I know they can come trough the opening when the window is out but I have noisey enough neighbors that I am not concerned about that. I plan on keeping some of the cost down by redoing all the enterior modeling myself anyway. The last time I did windows at my old 150 yr old house I did them one room at a time and it took me a year to complete the project. Having someone do it for me will save on that timing issue.

Thanks,

Doug

What kind of siding is on the house?? Installing new construction windows will mean cutting into it, and that will increase the chances of a leak. Besides, it would certainly reduce the amount of labor involved if you retrofit the windows. And if you hire it done, you are paying for that labor. Get the job quoted both ways, THEN decide whether to replace or retrofit.

Lefty, Thanks for your reply. The siding is Abestos original shingles from the early 70's, but all the windows are trimed out with brickmolding. To me I would think that if the molding is removed the plywood would be exposed for the new construction window mounting tabs. My last house I put in retro fit windows myself. There the windows were large and the retro worked well. Here the windows are small and retros would reduce the glass size which would also reduce the natural light to the rooms.

Look forward to your additional thoughts.
