I have a single door that leads out to my patio and I want to have french doors or sliding patio doors installed so the opening will have to be enlarged. Is this a difficult task ? I also have vinyl siding that will have to be cut in to. Could someone tell me what is involved with doing this and can it be done by my husband and me or should I hire someone to do it and what it may cost?

With the proper tools and a good knowledge of framing, and experience, this might be a DIY project for some poeple. HOWEVER, if you lack any of the 3 mentioned things, hire it done by a licensed contractor. And make sure the contractor you use knows how to install vinyl siding. A good portion of what's on the wall will have to be taken down to widen the door opening, new trim to match the existing will have to be installed and wrapped with coil (make sure the contractor has a brake to do that with), and new J-channel will have to be installed around the opening, then the vinyl cut to fit.

Thanks for the information! I will look around for a good contractor that is also experienced with vinyl siding. I will tell my husband your recomendations and see what he thinks
