I installed a sheet vinyl floor in my bathroom over the weekend. The adhesive manufacturer said to keep water off the floor for four days, so I just avoided the bathroom altogether so I wouldn't accidentally spill water. However, today I went back in and put the toilet back on and started working on it.
This is when I discovered I must have gotten some adhesive on my roller, because there is adhesive that is now, ever so helpfully, holding dirt to the brand new floor.
I saw in a couple of other posts that people have recommended paint thinner and adhesive remover for other situations, but I am concerned that this might damage the finish on the floor.
What should I look into to clean the floor of adhesive? Is there anything I can do to restore a finish if the only way to clean the floor destroys the finish?
Thank in advance for your help.

Mineral spirits, not paint thinner.
Rinse with a damp towel after removal of the adhesive.

Water on a towel will take forever and may not work at all depending how much is actually on the floor. I am a vinyl installer and I carry a can of charcoal lighter fluid around with me to remove any adhesive that gets on the surface of the floor. I guarantee it won't damage the surface wear layer. Paint thinner or mineral spirits will work just as well, but don't ever use anything like goof-off or goo gone on vinyl flooring, it will take the finish off the floor and leave a nice dull spot for you to see for the life of the floor.

Thanks for all the help!
The mineral spirits worked great, and now I can enjoy a floor without semi-permanent footprints.
