We are in the process of refacing our brick fireplace. We want to go with a marble tile, ceramic tile, or maybe just smoothing it out with stucco...haven't decided yet. But what is the best way to attach tile to brick...? Do you need to smooth the surface first, or can you apply motar directly to the brick and tile it?

Using a quality "modified" thinset you can easily tile directly onto your brick. Be sure to clean it thoroughly.

Having said that.....you will also want to be sure your brick face is plane/flat. It doesn't have to be smooth.:)
