I removed paneling from a ~450 sq/ft addition on my 36 year-old home. The addition is 30 years old or so.

Before I drywall, I plan on installing some new recessed lighting circuits. I bought 4" IC rated cans. The exisiting insulation is exposed (R-19 in the 2x6 16"OC joist space). There are many places where the kraft-face has holes / rips from the demolition. I know I am going to have to replace some of the insulation because of this. I am curious though how I am supposed to insulate around the recessed cans. Do I stuff un-faced insulation up along the can, or is it okay if the paper touches? I read in the light instructions that the vapor barrier needs to withstand 90 C.

Also, is using a poly sheet tacked up a better idea for a VB or is the kraft-faced insulation enough? In Philly 'burbs if it helps.

Thanks in advance.

Keep the paper 3 inches away from the can. No problem pushing the bare fiberglass right against and over the IC can. Just besure to follow the manufactuers maximium lamp wattage

Thanks Mike! That is what I will plan on doing. Gotta do a bunch of wiring before I get to the insulation stage!
