i have a bryant model 373lav downflow furnace.and air conditioning unit. the last two weeks my furnace is shutting itself off. i will go to bed and when i wake up it is not running. the temperatre on the thermostat is lower then what i have it set at.
upon reading the manual that came with the furnace it said to shut down thermostat and power supply. after turning the power back on furnace and blower appears to run fine, some times several hours later it shuts down, other times it is fine for a couple of days. i shut off the thermostat and the furnace for five minutes and then turn on the furnace then the thermostat and the furnace works fine again. could it be the thermostat or is this something that would require a service man. i have replaced the thermostat before, but i just don"t understand this.

By turning off power to the furnace you are resetting all the controls. Try a new t'stat....

Next time it happens, see if you have 24 volts at W and C terminals in the furnace. That will tell you if the problem is the t-stat or in the furnace.

You have not provided much info about your furnace.
Read the information at the top of this forum to know what we want.
If you will attempt to fix this yourself you need to arm yourself with a bit of information to be able to know what we are talking about.
I will assume you have a gas furnace.
If the thermostat is not defective then there is a likelyhood that the furnace is kicking out on a safety control.
Possibly flame sensor or high temp limit.
Check the basics like dirty filter/low air flow and then search this forum and read about similar problems, to at least familiarize yourself with the lingo.
As far as needing a service person goes I would at least check the basics and then decide if you want to spend the time to learn about your furnace.
DIY furnace repair is not for everyone.
