My backyard slopes downward, and I want to put a border around the patio, and I was wondering hoe to go about that and if it needs to be level? I'd sure appreciate any help in this area.

No, the border does not need to be level. If you will be putting it along the edge of the patio, follow the contour of the patio. If you are putting it 2 or 3 feet away from the edge of the patio, put it in as sort of a comprimise between the edge of the patio and the grade of the yard.
