I have a Bryant gas furnace from 1986 that has had a fan motor go out. The fan that comes on first shortly before air actually comes out of the vents has been squeeling for some time and now it just clicks and the main fan never comes on. I imagine I should turn the circuit breaker off (although taking the front panel off, turns it off) and take mounting screws off of the fan and it will just pull out. I'm not sure where to get a motor to replace it or if that will definately fix the problem.

Call a bryant dealer(search bryant heating and cooling). Give them model number of unit or part number of vent blower assembly. You've not given us much to go on to diaganose anything other than what you think the problem is.

Hello drolliso. Welcome to the Heating & Cooling forum & the D-I-Y Web Site.

Certainly isn't much specific information provided. I think you are referring to the forced exhaust vent fan. This fan is a small motor that vents the fumes from the firebox. The fan is usually located above the burners and does turn on before the flames ignite.

If this is the fan you're referring to, it can be replaced. Local heating agents and appliance part stores stock the parts. They are listed in the phone directory.

Removal of the front panel does not turn off this power venting fan motor if the fan is the power venting fan. Not sure which fan you are referring to. The fan that blows the warm air through the ducting turns off if the filter compartment access panel is removed.

If you are referring to the main blower fan that blows warm air thru the ducting, you can simply remove the entire fan cage assembly and take it to any local electric motor repair shop.

Fan motors of this size and type are both repairable and or replaceable. The fan cage has end bearings which may require oiling and or replacement. Blower fan motors may also have shaft end bearings which may need oiling.

Read the manufacturers web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes, solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly, repair procedures, instructions, pictorials, schematics, all or part of which may be available online.

Be sure the electrical power to the appliance is turned off, the thermostat is turned down and the gas control valve is in the off postion before attempting any repairs.
