Hi

I have a question maybe someone can help ??? A few weeks ago our pilot light went out, so we changed the thermal coupler.

then the fan was going all the time we still had heat so we didnt really worry to much about it . So anyways we had a service guy come out and he said the circuit board was bad..so we put in a new circuit board and that took care of the problem . The service guy showed us the problem..

we thought ??? And the pilot light went out again.. I lite it again and it is fine so far ..

can we have a bad thermo coupler?? and if so how do u tell , when we did change the other one it was pretty gone at the top .. I know i was surfing the net and went into alot of different places where they said to try to position the coupler closer to the pilot , ours pretty much just snaps in place . and the pilot pretty big so i dont think it needs adjusting ..

also i noticed , when the furnace kicks on i see the burners go on first, and they stay on for about a minute or so and then they go off and the fan kicks on , i thought they are suppose to work together, although when i did go to the vents it was hot air so it seems ok . just thought they are suppose to work together?? But didnt really pay attention to what they did before ...

Any info would be GREAT !!!!!

Thanks

Robin

Did you clean the pilot assembly? A big yellow pilot flame is not hot enough for thermocouple, blue and tight pilot flame is what you want. Themocouple should generate 30millivolts DC.

Hello: Robin. Welcome to the Do-It-Yourself web site.

The cycle of events the furnace goes through during normal operations does not effect the problem nor does the problem effect the cycle of events. These events are all preset.

The fan does not alter the events, it only senses heat in the firebox, which turns it on. Which means they do work together but individually from the other componets and events.

If the thermocouple is new, installed correctly and connected properly into the gas valve and the occasional pilot light outage continues, there could be several other problem possibilities.

The flame sensor could be dirty or defective. The flame sensor is an element device usually located on the burners. Cleaning the element is a simple matter of using a fine grit piece of sanding paper or steel wool.

The part may have to be removed to accomplish this task. If cleaning this part does not resolve the problem, replacing it should.

Be sure the electrical power to the appliance is turned off, the thermostat is turned down and the gas control valve is in the off postion before attempting any repairs.

For additional information, problem possibilities and solutions, read the questions within this forum pertaining to heater topics. These prior questions and the replies offered within them contain almost all the required information needed.

An excellent source for original replacement parts is your local retail appliance parts store, the local heating dealers and agents retail part stores. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. The info will help to determine the possible problem causes.

Heating Agents & Appliance part stores carry replacement parts for almost every heater brand. The locations for the dealers, agents and retail part stores are listed in the phone book.
