I have two bathrooms with old ceramic tile, one pink and blue, the other yellow and green. I would like to change the colors but retiling seems a bit too expensive. Can the tiles be painted? They are in the shower and thus exposed to a lot of moisture. If they can be sucessfully painted what product do you recommend? Finally, if painting is not an option can the tiles be tiled over or do they need to be removed?

While there are paints and coatings for just about every surface in the home, from the standpoint of long term durability these are considered a temporary option. Decorating around the existing colors until you get around to replacing tile is the best temporary option.

I was reading a story in another thread where some folks painted their bath tub but didn't follow the directions as far as waiting time for tub to dry before painting. Needless to say, they had a disaster.

Yes you can paint but it would be more fun to retile over the old tile. and it would last forever unlike the paint.
