The fireplace will only stay lit for about 20 min then goes out.

I checked the pilot orifice, it was clean. The flame from the pilot seems ok, touching the tip of the thermo couple.

After the flame goes out I cannot restart the unit right away. I have to wait about 5 min. Holding the control button in to bypass the T/C does not help. Once it is restarted it goes out again in about 20 min.

Any ideals would be appreciated.

Hello Grady. Welcome to my Gas Appliances Forum and our Do-It-Yourself web site.

Two possibilities come to mind. Either that Pilot Generator {PG} is weak or there is a restriction in the venting system.

The PG is the part the pilot flames encircle. You referred to it as a thermocouple but it's actually a PG. Even though it is being heated properly, the element wears out over time.

In doing so it produces less current which may be the reason why the pilot shuts off after 20 minutes. The natural drafts in the fireplace can and do provide some warm air to flow. This helps to slightly cool the PG and may cause it to cool down too much.

Another possibility could be some type of flue or chimmney venting problem. There is or could be in some fireplace gas log sets, a safety device sensor located up in the vent. If it senses too much heat in the vent it will automatically shut down the entire gas valve to stop the flames.

This sensor may also be faulty, if there isn't any reason for the flu gases and fumes to naturally exhaust. Be sure there is plenty of air flow into the fireplace and into the area in which the fireplace is located.

It's also possible the magneto head, contained within the body of the gas valve, is defective. The gas valves entire assembly is non repairable. If tested and determined to be defective by the appliance parts person, replacement is the only option.

Retail parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers if you stop in at the store. The info will help to determine the correct replacement part and possible problem causes.
