We started building our new house several months ago, and I planned to do the tile flooring myself. We live in a rural area, and our supply stores are limited. Locally one brand of grout is carried by a local store. It claims on the label, "Known in California to cause birth defects". Since starting construction of the house I became pregnantt. My question is, are all grouts and adhesives this dangereous? Are there some that are safer? Or do I automatically have to hire out all the tile work now? I've looked at other brands of grouts and adhesives online, but most online stores do not post the entire labels, so I can't tell if the products are as toxic as the ones carried locally.

What's the brand name of the grout?

Don't worry about it. EVERYTHING is known by the State of California to cause birth defects, Cancer, Aids, Bubonic plague, or a host of other diseases.
Any concrete like substance contains lime, and other chemicals/minerals (Portland Cement) that can be harmful, but only if exposed to mass quantities for long periods of time, and then only if inhaled or eaten in its powder state, or bathed in, in its moistened or un-set state.
So, unless you are a professional tile setter, and breathe this stuff every day for a 30 years, you should have nothing to worry about. If you're at all concerned, don't be around the powdered grout, or if you really must mix some up, wear a dust mask and some rubber gloves, and other body protection. (e.g. long sleeves)
Fully set and sealed grout is essentially inert, so you have nothing to worry about if you have already tiled floors.

The bag of thinset mortar should say the same thing on it too.
Known birth defects are caused by inhaled and through skin absorbance, of portland based cements. As You have seen, someone has tested it.
You may want to put the floor on hold, or hire it out.

I read that exact warning on one of my bags of grout today. I couldn't find any mention of it on a bag of thinset but it could be just as harmful I'm sure. I don't wear a dust mask when mixing, but I know I should. Why don't you let your better half do all the mixing for the project? Or better yet, since you're pregnant, let him do all the work and you can just supervise. That's what my wife did when I built our house. Bless her heart.

You can contact the company and demand a MSDS material safety data sheet --- they have to give you one if you ask. If you purchased your stuff at a place like Lows or Home Depot they can get a MSDS for you.
Use reasonable precautions like a dust mask and gloves. We don't want to do anything to harm you and your baby.Oh yea-NO HEAVY LIFTING !!!!
Pretty soon you wont be able to mow your grass in California unless you have a solar powered mower.
You might be able to get the MSDS online.
