I recently cleared out a storage locker that had furniture stored for about 20 years. The furniture looks good but obviously needs to be cleaned. What would you recommend I do? I'm thinking 1. take the seat covers etc to the dry cleaner, 2. Have the chair professionally cleaned and 3. Buy new foam cushions. the one in there feels old and hard. Also, on one of the chairs it looks like some of the stuffing is coming out on the side - I don't know if that is because it was damaged or mice etc went in there - should I toss it or try to salvage? It also looks kindof lumpy on the bottom. Help! I don't know how to fix up old furniture! thanks

1. not necessary to take loose cushions to cleaners if you are having the piece professionally cleand-they will do it.
2. Most reputable cleaners won't clean a piece if there are rips or tears in the upholstery. It's bad to get the padding wet directly. Try vaccuumung vigorously and setting it in the sun
for a day or so. Then check for mold or mildew odor. If it passes, consider having a slipcover made or reupholstering.
3. The hard cushion is probably latex and should be replaced. Expect to pay around $40. The chair with the lumpy seat probably needs the springs retied. The cost of having this done and having a slipcover made can exceed the cost of reupholstering (which would include retieing.)
Most upholsterers will give free estimates. Older furniture reupholstered by a reputable person will cost about the same as medium priced new furniture. The advantages are many. Frame, springs,
style, fabris selection are just a few.
