What is the correct way to place the cement board over the tub? do i put it down to the top of the flange of the tub? it seems that if it is put over the flange it will form a hump at that point when the tile is placed. I have it to the top of the flange and was going to overlap the tile over the flange so there would be no hump. The flange pertrudes far enough out and the tub is up against the wall as far as it can go. Will the tile overlapping the flange it seems to me no water could get behind it. Am I correct in this method. I stopped at this point till I make sure it is right. thanks Al

Hello Al,
Your CBU needs to go over the tub flange to within a 1/4" of the top of the tub, then that 1/4" gets fillled with 100% silicone. To prevent that bow on the bottom you can furr out the studs with luan strips ripped to the width and length of the framing. Be sure and use a vapor barrier of 4 mil poly between the studs and the CBU's.
Hope this helps... What part of Michigan are you in?

I am in Brighton. Do you end up furring most of these applications over a tub ? What you are saying is cut furring strips, attach thenm to the studs to get the backer board out enough to get over the flange, correct? Also need to tape all joints of the backerboard? Do I silicone the 1/4 gap before setting the tile? I know I need silicone at the tile -tub edge when done I just thought of something If I furr out the walls in the bath tub area, where the tile meets the existing drywall it will be off the distance of the furring. will that distance make any differance? Thanks Garrison for the help Al

Al,
Luan strips would leave the CBU about 3/16" proud of the drywall. This could be filled with grout and still look good. You could drywall around the tub to the top of the tub flange, then run your CBU over that and down to the tub, and use mud cap to finish off the exposed edges.
Yes tape and mud all the joints and silicone before you run that bottom course of tile.
