How would I go about repairing a big crack in the door jam.

It all depends on where the crack is and the overall condition of the jamb, other than the crack. I have repaired them using waterproof yellow glue and 3" deck screws on occasion. Othertimes the jamb simply was in such poor shape that it wasn't worth messing with. In that case, replace the jamb.

If you are handy and have access to a good table saw, you can replace just the cracked board.
You'll need a good 8' 1x6 and a piece of door stop which is similar to the one on your door jamb now.
It may take a while to do this right, but it would be cheaper than hiring it out or buying an entire jamb.
