OK -- I'mm looking for some affirmation. Here are the plans I've made for building a deck intended to hold a 6 person, 3000-5000 lb hot tub. Please comment!

8' x 16' area, 28" tall
6x6 posts resting on 1cubic ft concrete footers
2x8 bands, doubled, bolted onto the posts on the outside
2x6x8' joists, doubled (screwed and glued) on the 8' side that the tub will be on
5/4 decking
also, 3 additional short 6x6 posts supporting the underside of the tub.

mountaineer,

Almost all that you mentioned seems fine except for the 2x6's doubled joists. If you do this place them 16" apart under your tub area.

I would recommend placing at least 3 beams under the joists at this hot tub location. Requirements for most support systems for hot tubs is 90psf. It is standards that decks must hold 60psf live/10psf dead load. Double 2x6's don't do this with a hot tub and the span of only 8 feet would require beams underneath - this would also save on the amount of support posts as what you propose would be too many and not sufficient to carry the load uniformily. You may also want to incleas the pad size unless these are frost footings.

Hope this helps!
