any good strategies for repairing stripped-out, hinge screw holes in hollow core doors? drywall anchors seem to split the door spine, and glue gives out in the long term. suggestions?

You don't have a lot to work there to start with....probably a pc of 1 1/4" wide by 1" deep lumber on the door edges.....but I guess you already know that :) ....

Never actually had the problem, but I think I'd try drilling out the screw holes with a 3/4" to 1" fostner type bit ( that probably ain't spelled right)..one with the center spur and cutter teeth around the edge....or a hole saw..........and inserting a length of matching dowel rod with glue.....let dry, then DEFINITLY pre- drill a pilot hole in the dowel rod for the hinge screw ( you're going into end grain now and it would split EASY otherwise ).......

You'll have to be real careful drilling the hole for the dowel too, since you're right out near the face veneer of the door.

If you have a good table saw, you might also just dado out the whole edge lumber strip and cut a new one, glue in place.....I have done something similar to that to cut off the bottom of a hollow core door....there's even LESS material on the tops and bottoms if you ever get into those areas. I've had to shorten doors before for some custom situations, and just reused the strip in the hollow portion of the door once I trimmed away the veneer off the cutoff scrap, and chiseled back the cardboard interior stiffeners on the shorter door interior....glue and a few brads and you're back in business.

Oh yeah, I would also find out which one of the kids is using the door for a swing and apply a #10 can of KickButt to their backside too ! :)
