Oops. I'm guilty but I've gotten away with my crime. I had a vinyl kitchen floor over plywood subfloor and we put tiles directly on top.
This was 3 years ago and none of the tiles or grout has cracked. I was going to do the same in a foyer (same vinyl)...I was reading through this forum and read that I did it wrong the first time: I should have put down down proper sheets 'over' the vinyl before I put down the tiles.

My question: there is talk about tiles cracking, etc, when placed directly over vinyl ...and to definitely never do this over a wooden subfloor. Was I just lucky or are the new sheets over the vinyl just a 'precaution'? I'll probably change my floors every 5 or 6 years so can I tile directly over the vinyl and wooden subfloor?

Also recently installed slate over vinyl. The floor underneath was hardwood, ceramic tiles and at least one layer of vimyl tiles. I asked @ my local DIY store and they told me that as long as I stripped the glossy sheen off the vinyl, all would be ok. 2 ways to do this, mechanically (sanding) or chemically (Armstrong floor stripper). Chose the latter. Used Karaelastic brand mortar/adhesive as advised @ the store. All seems well.
