View Full Version : Trimming Hollow Doors

I just had new carpet and vinyl installed and the doors to the bedrooms no longer close due to the height of the floors. All of the doors are hollow and I was wondering how to trim them to fit. Is it as easy as just cutting off a small piece of the door, or is it considerably more complicated than that? Thanks.

That's exactly all you have to do. Use a skilsaw with a fine-tooth paneling blade, and a level or carpenter's square to mark it off with. Make the cut slowly due to the fine teeth so you won't "burn" the wood. Prime and paint bottom to match door and seal bottom. Don't cut off too much (it won't grow back), just enough to clear the carpet. Good Luck!

I might add thats its a good idea to mark a line where you want to cut the door at and then score the line using a straight edge and utility knife. Cut on the waste side of the scored line. This will help prevent chipping of the door.
