Hi, I was planning to retrofit my old AL sliding windows with Vinyl type. However, the window company said I cannot do it because the window frame is not flush with the outside stucco wall. The frame sticks out about half an inch. Is there anyway? Do I must take out the whole window frame? It's a lot more labor and $$$. I was thinking why can't we just cut off the part of the window frame that is sticking out.

NOT!! A retrofit window is sized to use your existing frame. Cutting the stucco just gives the wall one more place to leak.

I mean to trim off the part of the aluminum frame that's sticking out. Not the stucco wall. Would that be ok?

IT IS POSSIBLE TO REMOVE YOUR ENTIRE OLD FRAME WITHOUT CUTTING.BEHIND THE STUCCO AND ITS WIRE LATHE IS A NAILING FIN THAT IS MADE OUT OF SOFT ALUMINUM. YOU CAN COLLAPSE THE FRAME BY CLAMPING VISE GRIPS TO THE SIDES OPPOSITE EACH OTHER IN PAIRS AND USING A COME-A-LONG HOOKED TO THEM TO TEAR THE FRAME AT THE NAIL HOLES.OR YOU CAN DRIVE A WRECKING BAR BETWEEN THE FRAME AND FRAMING ON THE INSIDE TO GET THE SAME RESULT.
BUT BEAR IN MIND THAT OCCASIONALLY ONE OF THE NAILS HOLDING THE WIRE LATHE ON WILL ALSO PASS THRU THE NAILING FIN. WHEN THIS HAPPENS YOU WILL LOSE A BIG CHUNK OF STUCCO THAT WILL NEED TO BE PATCHED.NOW ORDER A "BLOCK FRAME WINDOW" OR CUT OFF THE FINS OF A STANDARD WINDOW-AND BE SURE TO USE DRIP CAP AND VERY GOOD URETHANE CAULK.

Hi, How about this idea, trim your al windows with 1x3 or 2x6 then secure your new windows to the trim. Good Luck Woodbutcher

That is a VERY doable solution, especially if you were to rabbit the edge of the trim board so that it would cover the existing window frame. Since you said the frame projects about 1/2" out from the stucco, I would use a 2X4 or 2X6 to trim the windows. Also, I would wrap it with aluminum coil. Check with a contractor who install vinyl siding to get that. The color selection is great, and there is no maintanence to it.
quote:
Originally posted by Woodbutcher:
