I have a dining room wall that has a large mirror and several sunken niches (three on each side of the mirror) I have painted the whole room an olive color, but I want some contrast from the niches. Do I paint the back wall of the niche a lighter color than the olive or a darker color?

why not choose an accent color for your sunken nitches? Have you ever looked at any of the "Painted Ladies" books? They concentrate mostly on the houses exteriors, but the idea with the ornate details of older houses is to accentuate these areas by either contrasting them or by going lighter or darker against the background or main color.

With that said, I would leave the wall color alone and paint your nitches either a totally different color, or perhaps have your green lightened or darkened, keeping with the same hue. This will make them stand out and frame the mirror nicely.

Just my opinion.
