I hope someone can help me with tips on painting those ugly 1980's mobile home kitchen cabinets. They have what appears to be a type of contact paper over MDF. I hate the look of that cheap paper stuff that is supposed to look like wood paneling. Do I have to remove that paper before I paint or is there a primer that will work? Thanks for any reply given.

If the paper is sound. Clean the cabinets with TSP, prime with Zinser to seal the surface well and provide a base for the finish. Despite my fascination with latex paint, I would use an alkyd paint on this soft surface.
