Is it necessary or preferred to cover the entire floor with wood filler then sand? Is the color going to be affected if I just use wood filler in the spots where I visible see the cracks, etc.?

Bob,
If the cracks are not visable in all the floor. Then the whole floor does not need to be filled and you can spot fill the floor. Sometimes it is faster to just fill the whole floor if their are cracks all over the floor. As a do it yourselfer. You only have to fill the cracks that you can't live with because it is your floor. I have done floors that the homeowner didn't want the cracks filled so it would look more rustic. The only real worry you have to keep in mind is what a posible buyer might think of them if you decide to sell. Include your family on the level of the job you do. They also have to live with it.
Good Luck, AL
