We have an older magic chef propane stove. The oven, when cooking, produces a yellow flame instead of blue which in turn leaves black sooty stuff in it. How and where can we adjust the jets to make the stove operate properly????

Hello Marilyn. Welcome to my Gas Appliances topic & our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
Yellow flames are most commonly caused by a lack of air into the burner tube. At it's end opposite the burner is an air shutter adjustment.
The adjustment rotates on the burner tube and has a tiny screw to secure the shutter in place. Opening the shutter slightly more than it currently is usually resolves the problem.
Providing there has not been a prior repairs to the oven, the burner is the same, no fuel conversion was made or parts replaced which may have created the condition.
Parts replaced could be any part the oven uses to control gas flow, like a burner valve, orifice, etc. No mention in your posting regarding recent repairs, fuel changes etc.
My thoughts on this condition is it has not existed for the entire time you have had this appliance. My assumption is it recently began. If so, than something change which created the condition.
Another possible reason for yellow burner flames is a lack of air flow through the oven compartment. In this instance, the oven vent may be restricted with something or somehow.
Covering parts of the ovens interior like the racks with foil will cause air flow restrictions as well as foil used to keep the exterior clean or covering the exhaust vent openings.
You also mentioned the stove. Does this imply the cook top burners also create soot? Or just the oven? How old is the appliance?
Kindly reply back with more detailed & specific information.
Use the REPLY button to add the additional information after attempting the correctional method offered.
Retail appliance parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Appliance parts dealers carry replacement parts for all appliances and are listed in the phone book under appliances.

Thank you for your quick response!!! I think you've solved my problem, I put one of those foil sheets in the bottom of the stove to catch drips and I think maybe that is the problem. (sure, had to be my fault - but I just got the "look" instead of the "I told you so's" from the hubby!!!!! Thank you again!
