Can anyone give me the lowdown on latex flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss and gloss and the best interior applications of these? Thanks in advance

Matte (flat) finish tends to be used mostly for interior ceilings and walls. Flat reflects the least amount of light and tends to minimize irregularities or blemishes.

Eggshell finish is preferred as a base coat for decorative painting and faux painting because glaze can be easily applied to and still adhere to its slight sheen. Glaze does not go on smoothly on flat paint and does not adhere well to glossy or semi-glossy. It is more durable than flat finish and can be washed.

Satin (pearl) sheen and semi-gloss are usually used for painting trim and kitchens and baths where you need to wash the paint because it is not as porous and absorbent as flat paint.

High gloss finish can be used for trim or any surface that needs a paint that can be cleaned because it tends to be more nonporous and durable.
