I'm guessing this has been covered a gazillion times but. . .what's the difference between rolling and brushing?

I have a small front porch to repaint before the weather turns and I figure my window of time is closing. The porch is new and will need to be primed which I will brush.

Can I roll the paint or am I being a lazy?

Generally, rolling is faster and neater. It leaves no brush marks. If you can roll it, roll it. Rolling is not lazy, it is smart. If the brushed primer has brush marks in it, they will telegraph through the rolled paint. Why not roll the primer, too?

Exactly what I was thinking. I consider myself an above average painter but have never enjoyed the brush strokes. I used a foam roller on some kitchen cabinets and have become addicted to the roller.

I filled in all the nail holes this afternoon and will do some caulking tomorrow morning. . .and then it's on with the roller.
