a few years ago i painted a bathroom with four inch verticle stripes in two shades of grey (grey and dark grey). i thought it looked great and recently saw a professional paint job where one wall in a bedroom was painted with verticle two inch stripes (same color but flat and glossy).
this is a neat way to make a bold statement without getting too crazy.
it was a lot of work but it looked cool. here is what i did:
please do any scraping, sanding, priming that is necessary - it pays off in the long run!!!!!!
painted entire bathroom with grey paint. let it dry really good (at least 2 days). start in one corner and every four inches make a pencil mark on wall. using a chalkline and level make a chalk mark the length of the wall at each of the four inch marks. you will now have grey walls with verticle chalk lines every four inches. use painters tape (the blue stuff) tape the right side of the first line, the left side of the second line, right side of the thirs line, etc...... i used two inch tape but one inch is enough. you can now see that every other four inch block is clear to paint with the darker grey. i used a spoon to run over the tape to make sure it was sticking good along the lines where i would be painting (this is important as the paint does bleed a little at the tape spots). paint with the darker grey and remove tape when dry. i was very impressed and finished with ceiling molding. you can skip the tape and do the lines by hand but i am not that steady. the professional job i mentioned before - by hand and mine was better!!
i mention the sanding, etc because i had an inperfection in my wall that i did not nitice until done bc previous paint wa sflat and i used glossy - the gloss reveals all imperfections (i.e. flat paint will hide stuff better!!)

I saw that too.It was beautiful! My sister in law does faux finish painting and she did her daughters bedroom a tone on tone but instead of using the same color glossy paint on the stripes she used poly U and it came out beautiful!
