is it possible for a DIY'er to cut a hole out in glass?? If possible what procedure, what tools etc.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Heck, it must be easy.....I see those cat burglars on TV do it all the time :)

I'd say you need a pro glass cutter, the type with an oil resevior to lube the scoring wheel, not the hardware store variety, plus a jig to mount it on to keep it on an exact circle....

I've never done a circle out of a center of glass, but have cut a lot of curves and "S" cuts with the pro glass cutter......

It is better to have a pro do that particular function. Although, depending on the size of the hole, where the glass is, the thickness, and the type of glass, are all very important factors in your decision. And, of course, how important the piece is to you :D ! Even the pros screw up occasionally!

A diode pumped laser works very well on that application, especially when coupled with a computer control cutting station. :)
If those are not something you have a glass cutter will work, with some way to make sure you have a nice circle (such as a suction cup and a piece of rope).

Is the glass in a window or is it a piece of glass that you want the hole in? What size hole?

hey johnam, thanks for your reply this is glass on a desk. I am looking to pass computer cables through the hole!!

The hole you need is about 2" dia. and can only be done with a diamond tube drill on a special drill press that sits on the glass. You must bring it to a glass shop.
