Our five year old GE dryer won't ignite when we set the timer on Auto. (This is the setting that lets the dryer determine when to turn the heat on and off as the clothes dry.) However, when we put the timer on manual and set it for a specific number of minutes, the heat comes on and stays on until the time runs out -- so there's not a problem with the gas or ignition.
Is this something we can fix by taking the timer off and getting a new one, or is it something else that's more complicated requiring a technician?

Hello: RobW12
Chances are the timer is the problem. Each selection on the timer has a different set of contacts. Those contacts determine the function of the dryers parts.
If the dryer functions correctly in the manual selection but not in the auto selection, than the gas valve, burner, etc are all working correctly. Suspect the timer control since it does not allow proper operation in the auto selection only.
Best option is to replace the timer. Doing so should resolve this problem based upon the problem description described.

DRYER SERVICE TIP & REMINDER:
It's always adviseable to clean the entire exhaust venting system every 2 years and or during any dryer maintenance, service and or repairs.
