I'm having a problem with my Kenmore Power Miser 6 gas hot water heater. I had hot water yeaterday, but this morning the water was cold. The pilot light was out, and multiple attempts to re-light it have failed.

I can depress the gas control knob and then light the pilot light, but once I release the valve, the pilot light goes out. I've lit it and waited the recommended one minute before releasing it, and I've also tried holding it down for up to five minutes to make sure the thermocouple is hot.

Do I need to replace the thermocouple, or might it be something else? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hello: utee94

Yes. First attempt to correct this type of problem would be to replace the thermocouple.

Read the prior posted questions on water heater problems and all other questions on water heaters within this forum for additional information.

Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers online web site for product information, problem solving methods, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures and instructions, pictorials and schematics, which may be available online.

An excellent source for orginal replacement parts is your local retail appliance parts store. Appliance parts dealers test and carry replacement parts for all appliances. Parts dealers are listed in the phone book under appliances.

Retail parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers if you stop in at the store.
