Gas and Oil Home Heating Furnaces - Caulking around copper baseboard penetrations/cleaning baseboard fins

What type caulk or other product should I use to seal the hole where the copper tubing comes up from thru the floor from the basement? This is for heat, so the pipe gets quite hot.

I find there is about 1/4" or so to seal. Thanks.

Also: any suggestions on cleaning dust from the baseboard fins. Even my very powerful shop vac leaves some behind. My son has dust allergies, so I want to do the best I can. This weekend I removed the covers and used a Q-tip to loosen the dust and then use the shop vac. Worked ok but took some time. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

It could make a mess but connect the vaccum hose to the output side of the vacuum and blow a sream of air over the fins.


To be safe use fiberglass insulation (without the paper) not caulking to fill the gaps.

As for caulking, I honeslty don't have an answer for that one, so you'll have to wait for some one else in this forum reply on that one..

When you remove the front covers of the baseboard, you should be able to use a soft brush and use that to brush in between the fins.. I've use a shop brush or a paint brush, and they worked good for me. Brush that comes with the shop-vac works ok, but it's not long enough to go inside of the coils..


If dust is an issue for your son, have you thought about one of those room air cleaners for him?
