I am concerned about carbon monoxide leaking from the exhaust flue on my propane fired furnace. Is there something I can wrap around the flue to prevent this. Also, I would like to use a side wall powered exhaust instead of the long pipe running up the side of the house, will this work? The furnace is about 15 years old and has a 4 inch dia. flue about 6 ft long that turns two corners before it goes through the wall.

JOREL:

What would give you cause for concern that CO might be entering the house?

Is the flue pipe damaged or not installed correctly?

It may be possible to install a power vent but this would depend entirely on the furnace mfr's recommendation and code.
You should call a serviceperson to look at this.

If you have any combustion type devices in your home, a CO detector could save you and your families life.

You are right, a detector is a good idea and I'll install one. The flue is not damaged but it does not look solid with all the twist joints and insert connections.

Sometimes these fittings don't look pretty, but they can still function properly.

Install the detector in the same area as the furnace and buy a fairly good one.

If it's been awhile since the furnace was serviced maybe now would be a good time.

having the furnace serviced will help reduce CO output. CO is a byproduct of incomplete combustion, and levels increase the dirtier your burners are, etc.
