I am fairly new to finish carpentry and I plan to to a number of cabinetry type woodworking projects. I plan to buy a biscuit joining tool, but am confused. I'm looking at several different "kits". Functionally what is the difference between a "Biscuit Joiner Kit", a "Plate Joiner Kit" and a "Power Planer Kit" ? They very in cost from about $30 to over $200. What does the $200 one do that I may want it to do besides cut holes for icuits?

Biscuit joiners or plate joiners provide an option to the traditional mortise and tenon joint as well as another method for aligning pieces to be joined. Power planers are exactly that: power planers. They plane surfaces.

A biscuit joiner will come with a fence of some sort. Beyond that there is a difference in price among the brands.
