i realize mushrooms aren't much of a problem, but i have several outdoor animals that i am worried about them eating them, so my question is, how can you tell if they're poisonous, or what's the best way to just get rid of them in general
thanks
mike

Hello kangelm and Welcome to DoItYourself.com :)

I've found that generally speaking, the only animal that doesn't have enough sense to stay away from unfamiliar and poisonous plants is humans.

And don't forget that what affects us may not affect other species.

You could type 'mycology' into a good search engine to find out more about mushrooms - but depending on how broad a search you do, you might have a lot of reading ahead - I got 94,800 hits on Google...

Maybe there are others on this board who know more about mushrooms and what to look for - also, I'll copy your question over to the Gardening forum - someone there might be able to give you some pointers...

Good Luck

Howie

Hi kangelm, Welcome to Diys Garden Forum :)

There are bold Mushroom Hunters, & there are old Mushroom hunters, but their are no Old Bold Mushroom hunters. I have lived by that now for over 30 years & I am still alive, after eating at least 40 different named Mushrooms :).

Dogs will avoid the truly deadly Mushroom Fruits. I once just smelled an Aminita Clorosa, & had a killer headache for 2 days. Read about it & had to try it.

Just like snakes the large majiorty of Mushrooms are not deadly. In fact their are so few deadly ones, I could teach them all to you in one day. The other toxic ones, can make you see things, get the runs & throw up, but not kill you.

If I had little children playing in the back yard with Aminita Clorosas present I would just take a shovel and scoop & bag then through them away. At three my son knew how to recognise one & say no eata Amanita, so he never did ;) There are only a few of the Amanitas that will kill you, & they are the dangerious group.

The fruit of the Mushroom is what you see & if you were to kill out the whole plant. You may have to spray some very nasty stuff allover a 300 square foot area or more.

Most Mushrooms form a symbiotic relationship with a tree. If you kill one, you may kill the other as well. The Mushroom is one of the oldest forms of plant life on Earth. Your outdoor animals will not eat the bad ones, they know by smell not to eat them.

I have had many dogs & also hunt with my dogs, the wild Mushrooms to eat. I have never had a dog eat one raw, or cooked. Well what does a dog know about Gormet cooking LOL? Don't worry :) Enjoy the beauty of the Mushroom fruits, they here for such a short time.
