I have question about our ventless fireplace logs. This has happen twice, Pilot light is burning and when you turn the knob to let more gas in to lite the burner,it seems will stay burning better and longer if the knob is turned up about hafe way.Well those couple of times the flame around the burner has gone down to nothing except the pilot.Still sounds like it is letting alot of gas in because you can smell the bad odor of gas.I turned it off til the smell went away.It seems the safty valve is working,I have blew the pilot light out before and it did shutdown in about 4 or 5 seconds. Can the burner get clogged or something.I would rather have the vented so the smell would go outside.thanks

Hello: Rodney

Most likely the burner is clogged up. The burner ports {holes or slots} are in need of cleaning if the burner is in good condition. If the burner and the other parts are questionable or in bad shape physically, replacing them may be the only option.

The pilot assembly could also be restricted. Cleaning it may help.
The burner safety in shutting down when you blow out the pilot is good. It proves the safety is functioning. However, the 4 to 5 second time span is poor. Indicates a weak safety. Safety shutdown time should be 60 seconds or slightly longer.

A weak safety is caused by a weak pilot generator. The pilot generator is the element the pilot flame heats. Usually encircled by the pilot assembly.

The pilot generator {PG} is round in shape and has two wire leads extending from it. Replacing this part resolves the weak safety issue. It may also resolve the burner flames reduction in size during operation.

A PG operates oh heat. More heat to it produces more current up to it's max. Less heat less current. Age deteriorates the current ouput also. Less output often causes the gas valve to slightly close resulting in deminished flame size.

To resolve the problem, clean out the burner, pilot assembly and replace the PG.

An excellent source for orginal replacement parts is your local retail appliance parts store and most gas fireplace appliance retail sales dealers. Appliance parts dealers have replacement pilot assemblies & PG parts for all gas log appliances. Parts dealers are listed in the phone book.

Retail parts dealers can also help determine what the possible problem may be. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. The info you provide will help to determine the problem causes.
